While the unaided eye can usually detect six or seven stars, there are more than a thousand identified stars in the cluster. I still remember the moment in the 1990s when I saw it for the first time through a telescope, a world of glittering diamonds. This single six-minute exposure using a 600mm telephoto lens also shows the dusty nebula that reflects the blue light of the hot, young stars. Studies show that the sun was once inside a similar star cluster in its childhood, about four billion years ago. Also known as the Seven Sisters cluster, it is "Parvin" in Persian, "Thuraya" in Arabic, "Subaru" in Japanese, and "Mao" in Chinese. It appears in the 17,000-year-old paintings in France’s Lascaux Cave and on the 3,600-year-old Bronze Age Nebra sky disk in Germany. It was a calendar mark for ancient astronomers, being close to the point of the vernal equinox in the sky, about 4,000 years ago.
