Robert Downey Jr., two-time Oscar nominee and forever superhero, is now navigating “the back nine” of his career, including a transformative role in ‘Oppenheimer.’

Four years after hanging up his iron suit for good, the actor is baring his soul in documentary projects while acting against type as an anti-charismatic bureaucrat in ‘Oppenheimer.’ If you ask those closest to the actor, that fiery performance is only the beginning of his unlikely third act. “Robert has certainly lived a complicated life. He understands the stakes, he understands loss, he understands the turns life can take between ups and downs,” says Marvel director Anthony Russo. “He’s always looking for that level of depth, that level of complexity. I think he knows that’s what we all come to movies for in the first place.”
