I was trying (rather unsuccessfully) today to explain to Matt how moving to the United States has knocked me off my seasonal orbit.
In Canada, Thanksgiving is in OCTOBER. So, after that, it's a clear shot from Halloween to Christmas.
This means that on November 1st, I feel shamelessly festive. It's in my cultural DNA. And when we sit down to our American Thanksgiving dinner (turkey in November??), I can't help but feel like it's Christmas.
But THEN we wake up the next day......and pick out our Christmas tree. Huh?
It's dizzying adjusting to a new country. And some Canadian things I'll never quite shake. Nor would I want to.
Sometimes I imagine: What if I didn't grow up right next door? What if I didn't have family here or my parents couldn't visit? What if I didn't speak the language? If my neighbours were confused or frightened (or angered) by my accent? My orbit's off kilter, sure, but my world's not upside down.
These are the things I think about as I hang my first Christmas ornament—shamelessly—on November 10th.
