I woke up too early today. Maybe because it's my birthday. Maybe because I ate ice cream before bed.
After a couple of hours, as the clock hit 7:30, I flung open Peggy's crate door and flung open my arms for a hug, and then she disappeared down the hall to wake Matt. I opened my present in the dark while he watched and smiled.
The city was still waking when we piled into the car and headed east towards the dog park. A Rottweiler kept barking at Peggy. A stranger exclaimed, "She runs like a gazelle!"
From there it was wherever the wind blew my heart—
Danish and latte at our favourite coffee shop.
A trip to Petco so Peggy could wander the aisles and choose a special treat.
Onto the highway, headed west.
We wandered a bookstore, walked the edge of the water, got a craving for pizza, but had a burger and fries instead.
I bought random special things: Maple sugar candy. A cookbook. Two Bernie Sanders pins.
In the restroom at the market, a woman stopped me near the sink: "Excuse me. I'm sorry. I'm looking at your hair and it looks like spun gold!"
Instead of blushing, I smiled: "Thank you for that compliment. It's my birthday today. I'm 41 and I can't stop wondering what exactly it means to be 41."
She told me not to worry, that I'd figure it out. And then she reconsidered: "All you need to know is you're spun from gold."
Now my cake's in the oven. The poodle's sleeping hard at my feet. I suspect I might soon follow.... It's only 3pm.
