Coming off of a tough season the year before I knew I wanted to do something upbeat and fun. I wanted to do swing, but I didn’t want it to be an interpretation of swing I wanted it to be as authentic as possible. I had spoken with Yuka to see if @クリスティー・ヤマグチ could put is in contact with any of the dancers from @dancingabc. Kristi told us that @thelaceyschwimmer ‘s father was the inventor of West Coast Swing so he would be the obvious choice. We got in touch with Lacey’s dad Buddy and he was excited to take on the project.
I went to California for two weeks in June of 2011 to work with Buddy both on the floor and on the ice. The first few days he taught me only on the floor before we took anything to the ice.
At the end of the first day in the studio we ran into Buddy’s son @benjischwimmer (winner of season two @アメリカン・ダンスアイドル). He ended up jumping on board to assist and eventually take over the project for his dad.
Working with the Schwimmer’s was an incredible experience that nearly broke me. Translating such detailed movement that is more about steps than glide was a challenge I was not prepared for. During one on ice session I was trying to figure out how to translate one series of steps and could not figure out any comfortable way. I was standing against the glass at the opposite end of the rink from Buddy and Benji. Benji walked around the outside of the rink to where I was standing only to find me, unmoving, blank faced, staring off into space. The work had figuratively (maybe literally) broke my brain. This challenge though produced something really unique and special. Because of the Schwimmer’s and their work I think this really came through in the performance.
For the costuming I wanted to work with a fashion designer. I wanted everything about this program and this season to be the antithesis of what I thought skating was. I was put into contact with @elisefife she designed this beautiful concept with spats, blue wool pinstripes, blue and silver lurex jersey Henley with a pleated bib, and my personal favorite touch the metallic silver suspenders.
Fun Fact: I bought red clip on suspenders that I wore every day in training.
