🔎 Spotlight on… ‘To Touch Stone’ by Sutapa Biswas: 'Visibility is everything...unpicking histories of invisibility is necessary.’
This large-scale pencil drawing of a reclining nude woman—modelled by the artist’s sister—spreads across nine sheets of paper, arranged in a 3x3 grid.
Some elements of the drawing are detailed, with others existing only in outline. The ground the figure rests on is marked not by a line, but with a flowing ribbon of words—here's a fragment: ‘from somewhere . from somewhere an indistinct sound came . murmer ~ n . to mutter; a rustling from the heart, lungs, etc., to touch stone.'
The incomplete phrases and partially complete image present the idea of something emerging from fragments. In this way the work addresses the fluid formation of identity, a theme that recurs throughout Biswas’ work.
Talking about this piece she says ‘perhaps it is only in the putting together of the fragments of paper that we can but recover a sense of ‘being’ and a resistance to our erasure across time and space’.
