Originally spanning the River Thames, in 1967 the bridge was bought by the founder of Lake Navasu City from the City of London and rebuilt in America. The recognisable signifiers of London (a red bus and a guard in traditional dress) are contrasted with hints at the bridge’s true location (American flags and a manhole cover in the foreground). ⁣ ⁣ In the centre of the painting, a man wears a sandwich board advertising a restaurant called Olaudah’s. Olaudah Equiano, born in West Africa around 1745 and sold into slavery, bought his freedom in 1767.
