West Dakota (@iamwestdakota) has been in a state of flux. “So much of drag is reacting to what is happening in the world in real time,” says the Brooklyn-based drag artist and organizer.
When New York City went into lockdown, West Dakota and her fellow performers found a new venue for their weekly shows: Instagram Live, where they used split-screen to create wonderfully wacky lip-syncs.
When protests for Black Lives Matter erupted, West Dakota helped organize about 15,000 people, dressed in all white, to march in support of #BlackTransLivesMatter.
“There was a lot of pain and anger and fear driving us, but on the day I couldn’t help but feel incredibly proud. To see our Black trans organizers commanding the attention of thousands of people was mind-blowing,” she says. “I don’t think I truly understood the meaning of Pride until this year.”
Today, we hear from West Dakota on why it’s important for the LGBTQ+ community to #ShareWithPride.
