This Atlantic puffin has a bill packed full of sand eels (but the record is many more). Puffins breed on land but fish at sea, so being able to carry multiple prey at once is key to efficiently raising a puffling (a puffin chick). The busy summer breeding colonies have now emptied out and the puffins will spend the rest of the year at sea. Next spring, the adults will return to land to start the whole process again. Meanwhile, the pufflings will stay at sea for 3-5 years before returning to land to raise their own chicks.
