Throughout the session, your partner cuts you off, dominates the conversation, calls you names, mocks your feelings, blames you for their behavior, and twists the truth in their favor. When the hour is up, you realize no one ever got around to discussing the “issues,” because there was no respectful communication from which trust could be fostered. This exhaustive therapy session represents how many Americans felt for the past four years. To be clear, I typically identify as a political independent. I hold views on issues that exist on both sides, as well as views outside of both party lines. But like so many, I felt immense physiological relief last week. The leader sets the tone for an entire nation — and when a discussion is led by a bully who doesn’t play by any rules, it’s easy for one side to feel dehumanized and hopeless. If you don’t agree, I encourage you to read psychology books about relationship dynamics, interpersonal communication, attachment theory, nonverbal communication studies, and narcissistic partners. The psychological effects of gaslighting are real. As is Stockholm Syndrome, pathological narcissism, and contempt. We’ve had all the ingredients for an emotionally charged, adrenaline-fueled 24-7 reality TV show. It’s collective trauma, pure and simple. All this said, I realize that almost 50% of the nation is not celebrating right now - and they have very real concerns around issues incredibly important to them. The left needs to do better to build bridges between opposing opinions. That means listening to and validating the other sides concerns and acknowledging the shortcomings of the political candidates we support. That also means more honest, nuanced, compassionate conversations, not cancel culture and name calling. America needs a really good relationship therapist to help us heal and rebuild this divide. This is not a one sided therapy session; we all have to show up and put in the effort. I know I certainly have a lot of work to do. Sending you all so much love today, wherever you are in your political and personal healing journey ♥️」11月14日 4時58分 - tarynsouthern
