The community center, run by local couple Bill and Addie Likens, hosts big drive-through giveaways once a month, and smaller food giveaways almost every week. The Likens give each family around 150 pounds of food, which they get from state food banks, federal programs, and private donations. This food includes pork shoulder, blueberries, beef stew, apples, chocolate, and canned vegetables. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit West Virginia in March, more than three times the number of people have been coming to the center for food. Bill and Addie sometimes have people knocking on their door in the middle of the night. On this day in October more than 700 cars pulled through, most with multiple families inside. On November 19, 915 cars—a record number—came. Dunlow is an old coal mining town , and the nearest grocery store is about a 30-minute drive for most, which means food access is a serious issue for many. @FeedingAmerica is the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that together provide food to more than 40 million people per year.
