Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / In Washington State, rural roads are lined by thin screens of uncut trees to hide scars where industrial forestry has clear-cut the landscape. The impacts of clear-cutting and replanting on local biodiversity and streams have long been clear. But the impact of such mass deforestation on climate has been debated for many years. Some forest and climate scientists side with industry, saying the replanting (typically three seedlings for each tree cut) and regrowth over time make such practices sustainable. As much, or more, climate-warming carbon dioxide ends up absorbed through photosynthesis as is lost. Indeed, both the European Union and the U.S. government have deemed wood biomass a “renewable” fuel in the context of climate. The issue, a host of other scientists and environmental organizations say, is the decades-long delay in tree regrowth and the lack of a guarantee that such lands will remain permanently forested.
