Photos by Elliot Ross @elliotstudio / Across the United States and especially in the Southwest, places like Los Angeles will see a significant increase of extreme heat by the year 2050. According to UCLA scientists, downtown Los Angeles will experience 16 days over 95°F compared to today’s average of 4 days per year. While that might not seem significant to people living in hotter places, LA, like other cities with historically mild climates, were not designed to protect and shelter its citizens from these kind of temperatures. A lack of trees, a sea of asphalt, millions of automobiles and intense glare off of reflective surfaces like high-rises all contribute to the very real and sometimes lethal effects of extreme heat events.
