‘Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.’

Claude Cahun (1894-1954) was a French queer photographer, sculptor and writer, best known for her self-portraits in which she assumed a variety of characters. Cahun's work was both political and personal, and often undermined traditional concepts of static gender roles. Alongside her romantic and creative partner Marcel Moore, she created a subversive body of work that is often associated with surrealism.

Cahun used female pronouns, hence our use of she/her here, but was fluid in her gender expression. Through her choice of a gender neutral name and androgynous self-portraits, she rejected categorisation. In her portraits she plays with costumes and traditional gender expectations to become a wide range of characters—dandy, doll, body builder, vampire, angel, puppet.

Her subversion continued into WWII when Jersey (where she and Moore lived) was occupied by the Nazis. The two created anti-German fliers addressed to the German troops which included allied news stories, poetry and illustrations. In disguise, they distributed them across the island for 4 years—on cars, inside cigarette packets and even into soldiers’ pockets at German military events. Towards the end of the war they were arrested for their actions, but were freed when the island was liberated.
