In 1991, Ida and Jupp got a call from their friend Pek van Andel. He was an eccentric, and over the phone he explained his idea for a very special and highly original piece of “body art.” “It’s never been done!” he repeated over the line. “Never!” That piece of body art? Asking people to have sex inside of an MRI machine. For science.⁠

Until then, nearly all assumptions of how the body worked followed Leonardo da Vinci's depiction. The female reproductive organ was a straight tunnel that didn't force a penis to bend, or conform to the female form in any way. But no one had actually fact-checked his sketch with an MRI, so no one knew if da Vinci was correct. So, a few months later, Ida and Jupp found themselves having sex inside of an MRI machine in a room full of scientists to change that. The image is pretty wild. Here’s their story.
