From a distance, "Impenetrable" by Mona Hatoum appears to be a cube levitating in the gallery. When approached, however, it reveals a menacing aspect: it is made of hundreds of barbed wire rods dangling from fishing wire.

The geometric form harbors a psychological charge. The steel latticework appears delicate as it is threatening. Such images are evocative of conflict, violence, and state authority.

Hatoum’s work is often discussed in relation to her experience as a Palestinian exile.
