To join an American Fat Men’s Club in the early 1900s, you had to pay a $1 fee, learn a secret handshake and – most importantly – weigh at least 200 pounds. As NPR reports, one of those clubs, in Wells River, Virginia, went by the mantra, “We’re fat and we’re making the most of it!” and the motto, “I've got to be good-natured; I can't fight and I can’t run.”⁠

The clubs mark perhaps the last time society celebrated size as a sign of wealth; at its peak, the New England Fat Men’s Club had 10,000 members. However, by the 1920s, turnout at the once-busy soirees had dwindled to a tiny slice of what it once was, and as the years progressed, the clubs faded into obscurity. Historians note that while there were a few female equivalents of these clubs, women’s fat reduction clubs – surprise, surprise – were far more common.
