For many, nail salons and nail art play an important role in self-expression and self-care. They are also workplaces—with a workforce in the U.S. that is 81% women. The D.C. Safe Nail Salon Project was born in 2011 to create safer conditions for nail salon workers and their families after Hien Vu, a community center director who tutored Vietnamese American students, noticed many children with developmental delays. The project advocates for salons to use safer products, proper ventilation and protective equipment for employees. Our @SmithsonianACM just opened "To Live & Breathe: Women & Environmental Justice in Washington, D.C."
