I began exploring watercolor because it was healing. Therapeutic. Something I could look forward to getting lost in. Of course there are the occasional frustrations with my own limitations and mistakes, but they don’t last long because I’m not doing this so I can be perfect. I’m doing this because I love it. The sounds, the colors, the pace, the surprises, ALL OF IT. ⁣

After the first lesson I took with my incredible watercolor teacher Bindi (@create__d), I painted these three tulips as practice. The goal was repetition and leaning into curiosity, discovery, and joy – nothing more. ⁣

The entire time, I could hear Bindi’s voice in my head:⁣
“Great work Bryce, but try to loosen up.” ⁣
“Not so tight. Ease up the grip. Just go for it, go for it Bryce!” ⁣
“It doesn’t look as good if it’s perfect, I promise.”⁣
“Okay, now stop – just let it happen. Let’s see what happens. Let’s see what the paint does.”⁣
“It’s supposed to be imperfect, I promise, it is beautiful.”⁣

But these weren’t just loving reminders about my technique. I realized that the same challenges that come up in my watercolor practice are often what I need to address in other areas of my life. ⁣

So I share this video (fully recognizing the potential irony in posting the “unseen” to a very visible sharing place), in hopes that these true words from Phyllida Barlow give you permission to explore your creative instincts just for you.⁣

Drop a 💛 in the comments if there is something you have been wanting to create, small or big! What happens when you give yourself permission to not do it perfectly? Let me know:)
