At first it seems to be a simple image of a child reading with her sister and a maid. The picture becomes more poignant when we consider that it was painted by a Jewish woman, believed to be the first Jewish woman to become a professional artist in England, and one of the best-known artists of her generation. The woman at the centre of the image was modelled by Jamaican-born Fanny Eaton, who became a prominent muse for many Victorian artists and featured in some of the most iconic paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite period. Solomon was an exceptional painter and advocate for women's rights in a male-dominated world, whilst Fanny Eaton was a Black woman in a predominantly white profession.   The theme of the painting is education – beautiful leather-bound books crowd the shelves, a print on the wall seems to depict Shakespeare and an illustrated volume has been laid out before the trio. 🖼️ 'A Young Teacher' will be on free display soon in Tate Britain’s new Pre-Raphaelite gallery, alongside many works by Solomon’s male counterparts, including her brother Simeon. In autumn 2024 the painting will move to the @MuseumOfTheHome, who have jointly acquired this work with us. ❤️🏠」6月8日 22時56分 - tate
