“Doing Nothing” in a New/Old Way

For the last year, Calvin and I have been working on a very large project; making our old life new. We’ve bought an old house, an old truck, old furniture and ancient native plants. We’ve brought our old selves into a new environment to see what they may become. It’s a playful and experimental time.

We’re figuring out “How to do Nothing” in the Jenny Odell sense of it and by that I mean being very aware of where we are placing our attention, what we believe being productive should mean for us as a couple, as individuals and engaging with nature on a deeper level.

Next week I turn 70 and feel a change coming on. Amorphous still, I welcome yet fear it as I don’t want to go back to where I was before; burnt out, passion and creativity drained and distracted away. Last week I retired from my social work consulting jobs, I no longer “influence” in the commercial way and for all intents and purposes the book is done save for copy edits. I will celebrate this birthday by “doing nothing”.

When I first began Accidental Icon my website was the container for my dreams and passions, in this next rendition my container will be my Substack. I’ve been too busy finishing up that big writing project to write much on it while also insuring my 9 month old grandson who is now pulling himself up on every available surface does not fracture his skull! But my birthday on the last day of spring announces summer which brings the delicious freedom of having “nothing to do.” I can’t wait to create something new in my Substack which I want to be the virtual equivalent of my Shed. I have some ideas but as always welcome yours.

I’m thinking a discussion about books, making and fashion that is not like your usual book club, a newsletter sharing things we find interesting, on-line chats and who know what else. I want to figure out a way for us to have “coffee” and “tea” together in the shed, maybe via zoom. But right now just letting ideas float around.

That being said what kind of things would you like to see us doing and talking about in my new/old vehicle the Substack/shed?
