Photo by @stephenwilkes | The bison are North America’s largest land mammal. Revered by the First Nations peoples, these majestic creatures used to be an incredible resource until unchecked hunting reduced their population from tens of millions to mere thousands. In the early 20th century, the Canadian government purchased one of the last herds on the continent, transferring 700 bison to Elk Island National Park, outside Edmonton. For a hundred years, the park has been a protected sanctuary for the bison.

Last year, with the generous support of @insidenatgeo, I traveled to Elk Island to document these marvelous creatures. For over 36 hours, I watched as they grazed on the fields. I’m amazed by their resilience, and grateful for the plan to protect them for generations to come.

In my Day to Night series, landscapes are portrayed from a fixed camera angle, capturing fleeting moments of nature as light passes in front of the lens over the course of a full day. A select group of these photos are blended into a single composite image. Swipe for full image.
