Here’s another Barbie post for your feed, except it’s not about the movie that just came out: Instead, we’re looking back at when Mattel pissed away millions of dollars trying to make Barbie a *thing* in China.
In 2009, Mattel opened its first Barbie flagship in Shanghai, thinking it would be the ultimate destination for children and adults alike. The $30 million, 36,000 square foot space featured not only limitless Barbies selections, but child-unfriendly offerings, like Barbie-themed martinis and breast-firming treatments, alongside a restaurant, spa and even a bridal section designed by Vera Wang.
It was described by its creators as a “sleek, fun, unapologetically feminine interpretation of Barbie: past, present, and future,” featuring six floors of translucent polycarbonate panels trimmed in neon pink lighting and mid-century modern elements throughout. Sadly, Barbie in Shanghai would not boom – it closed just two years later.
