The fashion designer Sandy Liang has built a namesake brand known for its buzzy collaborations and twists on nostalgia.
@sandyliang started the brand in 2014, after graduating from Parsons School of Design. Many of the brand’s most beloved pieces were inspired by Liang’s childhood wardrobe. In 2019, a playful, bold fleece became something of a holy grail among fashion insiders. In 2022, when Liang introduced her line’s first shoe, a Mary Jane flat with a pointe toe that conjures after-school ballet lessons, the initial inventory of about 800 pairs sold out in two days.
Her collaboration with @baggu, which was released this week, quickly sold out, too. Before the collaboration dropped, dozens of people shared DIY versions of a nylon shoulder bag with thin bows on its sides on TikTok. Bows, Liang said, were a part of “this whole childhood emblem thing,” along with other symbols — hearts, stars and flowers — that have become motifs in her designs.
The childhood nostalgia underlying Liang’s work can also bum her out. “I’m obsessed over something that I can actually never return to,” she said.
