The New Museum is saddened by the passing of Brice Marden. Over more than four decades of painting, Marden's meticulous and deliberate abstract works emerged as a defiant study of the tensions between complexity and simplicity. Marden's work "Untitled" (1973) was displayed at the New Museum in 1979 as part of "The 1970s: New American Painting." His work was also included in the 1983 exhibition, "Language, Drama, Source and Vision," a group show inaugurating our 583 Broadway location. Marden's ability to explore the range of abstract and nonobjective modes of painting will be forever honored by all of us at the Museum.
