For as long as sailors have been going out to sea, they have been returning with stories of monsters. From disparate accounts emerged a common portrait of a singular beast: a huge sea creature, with fearsome appendages—what we now call the giant squid. It’s been said to be larger than a whale and stronger than an elephant, with a beak that can sever steel cables. But sightings are exceedingly rare. How could something so big and powerful remain unseen for so long—or be less understood than dinosaurs, which died out millions of years ago? In 2004, David Grann joined the “world-renowned squid man” Steve O’Shea to try and capture a living specimen. Revisit his account of their quest at the link in our bio.
