Pre-code films were made before the 1934 Hays Code which censored movies depicting social problems, sensuality, crime, bawdy comedy and horror. West was no stranger to censorship. She was once arrested on stage while performing on Broadway in a play she wrote, produced and directed which contained adult themes. West managed to write two and star in three films before feeling the effects of the Hays Code. By 1935, she was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. At age 85, Mae West starred in her last film based on a play she wrote, “Sextette,” alongside Ringo Starr, Tony Curtis and Alice Cooper.
