Words by National Geographic Explorer @dr.shireenrahimi | I look down and feel a deep sense of awe. The cave’s opening forms a massive funnel, adorned with crystalline columns, leading 30 meters down to a sapphire blue but highly toxic body of water—our field site for the week. We take turns rappelling on ropes toward the inhospitable lake to search for the only form of life that can grow in it: microbes. They flourish in these oxygen-poor underwater caves—places you wouldn’t expect to find life. And they’re everywhere, hanging motionless in black, stringy mats along the cave’s tunnels.

Lead scientist Jennifer Macalady believes these microbes grow in conditions similar to when life on Earth was just starting to evolve, as well as conditions on other planets’ icy moons. By cave diving to collect physical samples and images of these microbes, we hope to gain scientific insights into not only how life on Earth evolved but also how to detect life elsewhere in our solar system.
