Join us over the next 20 days leading up to the Emily Fisher Landau Evening Auction on 8 November at #SothebysNewYork as our specialists spotlight 20 key works from the Collection, celebrating their impact on twentieth-century art. Today, @‌kelstheleonard, Head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening Auction in New York kicks off with Jasper Johns ‘Flags’.

“Within art history, there is before Johns and there is after Johns. And nowhere is that radical shift more apparent than in his Flags.” Jasper Johns Flags form one of—if not the most—well-known series from the artist’s legendary career. They are also the most rare. With only 26 flag paintings on canvas in existence, over half are already in museum collections around the world. ‘Flags’ from 1986 is one of the few remaining in private hands.

After meeting and visiting Johns several times in her weekly trips to the galleries in downtown Manhattan, Emily Fisher Landau acquired ‘Flags’ the year after it was made, directly from the Leo Castelli Gallery. It’s the rare collector who not only has impeccable taste, but also a desire to know the artists on a personal level.
