テート・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (テート・ギャラリーInstagram)「Happy 142nd birthday Pablo Picasso. 💙 There's more to Picasso's painting, Girl in a Chemise, than meets the eye... 👀 X-radiography reveals that beneath the female figure there is a painting of a young boy with a floppy collar. The subject matter of the 'saltimbanque' (travelling entertainer) featured heavily in Picasso’s work at this time, and it seems that the work originally showed a portrait of a boy in a costume which may be associated with that of a Pierrot figure. Picasso does not completely obliterate the Pierrot underneath, although the natural tendency for oil-based paint to grow more transparent over time means we can assume that it wasn't always so easy to see the underlying image. The girl’s upper chest includes substantial traces of what looks like a ruff or collar, partially concealed beneath the thin layers of paint. It is not known when Picasso transformed the painting from a young boy to a young woman, but we think it may have been a very quick transformation.
