#DayOfTheDead or Día de Muertos is a celebration of life, not death. During this celebration, some women dress as “La Calavera Catrina,” donning skull-inspired makeup with elaborate skirts and hats. In this photo, a dancer performs as La Catrina at our @smithsoniannpg’s annual Día de Muertos event. Some families commemorate their ancestors by creating ofrendas (altars) featuring photos of loved ones, sugar skulls, marigolds, candles, and other symbols, which welcome the return of the spirits of the dearly departed.
