She lived in southern Gza in Khan Yunis, and died there when her home was hit by an air strike by IDF forces on 20th October. She wrote this gut wrenching powerful poem titled ‘I grant you refuge’ ten days before her death. In Claire’s words: ‘here, refuge is a nest, the belly of a whale, and children’s smiles change the course of rockets; the sharp citrus of oranges is protected from the ‘sting of phosphorus’, and the shades of clouds are shielded from the black of smog.’ Humanity feels so dark right now, as things continue to become uncovered.
