It reminded me that in this time of so much grief and anger it feels vital to remember that at the very heart of the struggle for Palestinian liberation is L-O-V-E. A love for a people, a love for a land, a love for HUMANITY. bell hooks told us “there can be no love without justice”. But to talk about love as justice we have to acknowledge the power relations that continue to be at play here: one has been and continues to be the oppressor and the other the oppressed. If we can start to think of decolonisation as love then love would mean ending the entire system of settler colonialism that has been asphyxiating Palestine and its people for the last century. The truly courageous even when feeling so much grief and terror, refuse to diminish the value of any human life, who refuse the lie that we cannot protect both Palestinian and Israeli lives. Because they’re the ones who know: there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’, that there is only an us. That remembering, is the most powerful form of love. Here are some photos I took in London in 2021 that to me exude this kind of revolutionary/evolutionary LOVE that we need now more than ever.
