Since 2020, the artist and musician Holly Herndon and her husband, Mathew Dryhurst, have been refining Holly+, a machine learning model trained on Herndon’s voice. Holly+ represents the future that the pair anticipates for music, art, and literature: a world of “infinite media,” in which anyone can adjust, adapt, or iterate on the work and traits of others. The two have also been working to establish a way for artists to determine whether, and how, their work is used in the data that trains A.I. models. Herndon rejects the idea that an A.I. system could become “the best artist.” “There are cool, sophisticated systems, but they are nowhere near as sophisticated as this,” Herndon said, while gesturing toward herself. “This is remarkable.” At the link in our bio, read more about how Herndon navigates the tensions between art and A.I.
