In a new Personal History, Zadie Smith recalls her teen-age self: a cigarette-smoking Prince fan with an unrequited crush and a penchant for writing long orations to be read at her funeral. “Many interesting things have happened to adult me,” Zadie Smith writes, “but in the opinion of teen-age me there is only one real event in our lives and it occurred on the 16th of April, 1993, when I fell 30 feet from my bedroom window.” The incident raised questions for Smith about the nature of time and volition—themes she’s grappled with in her work ever since. “Did I fall or did I jump?,” she writes. “Was it an accident? A subconscious choice? A decision? All of the above?” Read her essay at the link in our bio. Photograph by Yuki Sugiura; Source photograph by Daisy Houghton.
