Since Palestinian militants killed an estimated 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped more than 200 others, on October 7th, northern Gaza has borne the brunt of Israel’s military retaliation. After a week of air strikes, Kamal Al-Mashharawi, a 24-year-old resident of Gaza City, wrote on Facebook, “I hope this night will be kind to our fragile bodies and tomorrow will be better.” In the weeks that followed, Mashharawi sent the New Yorker editorial staff member Adam Rasgon a string of photos, videos, and voice notes about his family’s experience. “The world is closing in on us,” he wrote in a November 4, 2023, WhatsApp message.
