Sharon Liese (@sharonliese) and Catherine Hoffman’s (@cath_hoffman) short documentary, “Parker,” follows three close-knit generations in Kansas City through the process of changing their last name and unravelling some family history. The relatives get into serious subject matter—the issues of identity, history, and parentage that are baked into names—but they never lose their sense of lighthearted affection. Hoffman said that she wanted to make a film that celebrates Black joy, noting that the Parker family’s love and sweetness are “not something that you get to see Black families do and be onscreen.” Watch the full film at the link in our bio.
