Philip Guston lived to paint, but also loved poetry, saying ‘poets see without the jargon of art’. He created ‘poem-pictures,’ vibrant illustrations of everyday items to accompany poems, for his wife, poet Musa McKim and others.

Poet Andra Simons explores how poetry can open up different readings of Guston’s work. He has written ‘Channel’ in response to Guston’s painting ‘Passage’, on display at Tate Modern:

‘The Sea has an appetite for wood
which has been hand-crafted into a small boat.

With such a long memory, he has gleaned how
to swallow from stern to bow.

He rocks the hull with permission, legislation
and currents. A sea has the weight of
an ocean behind him, to crack wood
like bone to the bottom.’
