The four works shown here form part of the artist's 'Hawaii Snorkel Series', set in Hawaii and created in 1993. 🥽⁣ ⁣ Teraoka's work looks to depict clashes of cultures and encounters between different moments in time. His early works in particular are often satirical, combining the stylistic influences of Japanese woodblock printing and American pop art. In the first woodcut above, 'View From Here to Eternity', we see two figures emerging from waves that crash on to a rocky coastline. The white surf curls around the figures like fingers—Teraoka has said he wanted the waves to be deliberately 'caressing' the scene. The man on the left is removing his snorkel, and we can't help but follow his eyes which look straight to the women's bottom. The woman is holding her snorkling mask, suggesting that the duo have just met in a momentary break from swimming.⁣ ⁣ 🌊🌊🌊⁣ ⁣ Teraoka is an artist who uses humour to bring attention to often very serious social, political issues.
