Anyone who knows me well knows how much of an influence @サム・スミス has been on my skating. I believe I’ve skated to 5 of their songs by now. 🤷🏼‍♂️ (thanks for being a muse Sam! 🥰) When I first heard this song it was spring of 2015. I was still training hard deciding if I wanted to compete and try to make a run at worlds in Boston. I had finished my training for the day and there was still a few hours of ice left at the rink. The sessions had no one on them. It was completely private is, so I decided to put on my headphones and skate around just for fun as a bit of stress relief. I was listening to this song on repeat and the movement just started to come out very organically. Yuka happened to be in the rink, so I asked her to take a look at what I had been doing. She liked the direction and stayed with me for about an hour for me to bounce ideas off of. It took about three hours in total and I had an entire program completely by accident!
One of my favorite parts of this program is the boot slide right after the double axel. It comes at the lyric “why do I feel weak”. I wanted a movement that completely took me off my feet, buckled my knees, and had me crumple to the ground, but I had just started getting momentum so I didn’t want to stop. I was trying to think of ways to depict this, but nothing was emotionally satisfying enough. No lunge, no body slide, nothing satisfied that need for a raw emotional response. Then I had the crazy idea to sit on my boots and continue sliding. I was actually afraid to try at first because I was worried about injuring my knees, but once I built up the nerve to go full force I immediately knew it was exactly what I had been looking for.
Music: How Will I Know by @サム・スミス
Choreography: Me under the guidance of @yukasato0214
Costume: Ugly last minute mall purchase with haphazard stoning done by me 🤦🏼‍♂️
