From our collection, Rasheed Araeen's ‘Bismullah’ uses imagery of Eid al-Adha, particularly around the theme of sacrifice in a literal sense, where, in many traditions of Islam, meat is distributed to those who may be struggling more than others.⁣

On one hand we could consider that Araeen questions the authority of religion, by changing 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah) to 'Bismullah' (in the name of the religious leader), but on the other, Araeen could be seen to be challenging the idea of modernism represented by an art world that is separated from religion -- with imagery that is 'incongruent to the purity of minimalism'.⁣

Araeen puts a spotlight on notions of sacrifice. He has commented on how the work contrasts negative perceptions of sacrifice (when seen as a religious act) with the normality or glory of sacrifice of other kinds, such as sending people to death in military conflicts.⁣
