When it's been a long week, we feel like the best thing to do is look at baby hippos.
This one is pictured with its mom, Hannah, in an undated lantern slide in our @smithsonianarchives' collection.
It's possible the baby was called Gumdrop, so named because a little girl visiting @スミソニアン国立動物園 in the 1930s remarked that one looked like a gumdrop. This started a surprisingly long history of calves born at the Zoo being named Gumdrop—all the way up through Gumpdrop XVIII in 1956. William Johnson Hippopotamus, best known as Billy, fathered them all.
