This Saturday's #TatePostcard is a profound painting by Mark Rothko, sent with love from Pablo @_pablobeltran to his girlfriend Natalia @natalia_mataa who live in Mexico City.

'I think of Natalia when I see this painting. Distance helps us realise that emotional connections are deeper than physical ones. I chose this painting by Mark Rothko because the bright yellow reminds me of her vibrant personality and contagious happiness. We are both big fans of the artist's paintings.' 💛

In Rothko's later work he developed a style in which hazy, luminous blocks of colour float within a vertical canvas. He believed that 'a painting is not a picture of an experience, but it is the experience' and he sought to create this solitary meditative experience within his works, scaling the paintings so that the viewer is enveloped in their subtly shifting surfaces.
