His art was rooted in nature, and he was drawn to trees because of their often chaotic structure and naturally harmonious forms. Mondrian painted a series of trees between 1908 and 1912 which gradually became more abstract as he attempted to distill the essence of their beauty. In many cultures and thought systems, trees are connected to mystical forces. Swedish painter Hilma af Klint also created a series of abstract tree works influenced by her interest in science and the spiritual world.
