And you fall in love with your partner more when you see them become a parent. But then things get hard, and there's not as much time for each other. Even though before the baby comes you can't imagine anything coming between you, something does. And then the resentment creeps in. At least for me. You know, I think if I was a dad I'd be much more content. Even the best dad's in the world! There's Less judgement, they aren't recovering. People heap so much praise on them for doing things that mums are expected to do. It's easier to just walk out the house. No pumping. Less logistics. It actually knocked me for six how even a relationship as equal as ours changed after Alf. Society makes it a different experience. And I don't think anyone can prepare you for being touched out. So this time, we didn't really put pressure on us. We just tried to be a team. A good partnership. Good parents. The focus was on looking after our kids as a priority. And looking after ourselves as individuals as a second. For Tommy, that meant time to exercise. Even just 30 mins to himself. And for me it meant, well, just time on my own. It sounds silly. I'm an extroverted introvert. I recharge on my own. And it also meant separate beds this time. I could cosleep and do the night feeds, Tommy could get a full night sleep but do the early with Alf. We both just trusted, from experience, that we'd find out way back. That being a good partner and standing by each others careers and personal needs to keep our cups full would keep us together. Well, what better way to finish this week of sunshine with an impromptu date night before Tommy's birthday. First night out (that's not work) for me, and our first night together. I remember this night so vividly with Alfie. It's that taste of independence. And it comes at different times for each parent. For Alf it took longer than it did for ada.
