Glowing a wonderful and warming orange, Sargent’s painting of Dolly and Polly Barnard is one of our absolute favourites. 🧡 ✨

The title of this artwork comes from the song 'The Wreath', by 18th century composer Joseph Mazzinghi, which was popular in the 1880s. John Singer Sargent and his friends, including illustrator Frederick Barnard (the girls's father), frequently sang around the piano in Broadway, where Sargent was staying. The song asks the question 'Have you seen my Flora pass this way?' to which the answer is 'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose'.

Sargent painted the work from life in the garden of the Broadway house. There were only a few minutes each evening where the light was right. He would place his easel and paints, pose the models beforehand, and wait for the right moment to start. As summer ended and the flowers died, he replaced them with pot plants.

'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, 1885–6' is currently on free display at Tate Britain, and will be in our upcoming exhibition #SargentAndFashion - a celebration of Sargent's remarkable paintings - opening 22 February 2024. 🖌️
