#ArtWords: With origins in 1970s New York, 'Graffiti art' refers to images or text painted usually onto buildings, typically using spray paint. Keith Haring begun his graffiti work by drawing in New York’s subway stations; filling empty poster spaces with chalk drawings which people would walk past every day. His aim was to make art accessible to everyone.

peterbengtsen @xartthemovie @itisi_siru Sorry for creating some confusion in the timeline of these comments, just wanted to add something to my original post: The wall was actually painted twice by Haring. The first time was without permission, and that painting was buffed. It was then painted again by the artist as a commissioned piece. I'm not quite sure which version is depicted here, but fellow art historian @track172 will likely know.

bugzybeetleblossom I think what's most overlooked about the Artist Keith Haring is how he was an early Maverick who honed the Universal language we know today. The "voice" really rose above the work. He must've been a very brave person.

thirdrail25 This handball court is iconic in NYC. Keith haring did this piece due to what was happening in the 80’s with the crack epidemic. And also it was dedicated to his studio assistant.

thirdrail25 @william_nikelondon that was Keith’s haring style. That wall is world famous. He was actually respected by most of the graffiti writers and they would hang out at his studio.
