John Crome founded the Norwich School of Painters, a group of 19th century artists spanning three generations, who primarily concentrated on landscape.
His early pictures were strongly influenced by Dutch 17th century painters but his later work, like this painting, shows his interest for naturalism and atmospheric effects. Crome and John Constable were some of the earliest artists to paint portraits of trees, representing specific species rather than generalised tree forms. Constable’s favourite tree was said to be the ash. 🌳
