Right now African elephants are listed as "Vulnerable" and Asian elephants as "Endangered" with many thinking the numbers are lower then that. A few years ago while in Thailand I was lucky enough to visit the ethical sanctuary #elephantjunglesanctuary where you only feed and bathe them (Yes I got to bathe with elephants). I’ve never seen such happy joyful animals. Content doing exactly what they naturally want to do. Unfortunately, the elephant tourism industry in Thailand is driven by tourists who are ignorant to what these highly intelligent and social animals go though. Ripped away from their mothers at an early age, isolation, starving, hitting and beating with a bullhook are just some of the methods used to initially break their spirits and get them to behave and perform. All of the elephants I met were rescued or orphans of the tourism industry. One older elephant had a broken back from years of being rode by happy oblivious people looking for a photo opt. My heart breaks for all the animals abused for our pleasure.
