I was listening to a robin wall kimmerer (the botanist, ecologist, mother, scientist, professor, member of the potowatomi nation and author most known for her incredible book @braiding_sweetgrass) lecture not too long ago where she talked about how in this day and age children and adults alike are more capable of naming logos of brands than plants, animals and trees and that really shook me to my core because it’s so hauntingly heartbreakingly true. what a tragedy that it’s become more normalised to recognise a Nike tick than recognising our non-human kin, that they are strangers to us. our biggest downfall as humans is that we think we are the most important ones here on this earth, that we are not and of each other. Robin brings up the important point that in the english language, we mostly only use pronouns for humans (and sometimes pets) and not for other animals, plants, and landscapes. she shares that in many of indigenous languages, such barriers are dissolved, and so, too, is the sense of distance between human and nonhuman. flower & plant id’s: 1 - rock rose, grey leaved cistus 2,3,5,7,8,9 - different kinds of chinese hibiscus 4 - gum rock rose 6 - frangipani 10 - gorse 🌺」3月14日 19時29分 - naomishimada
